I wasn't wired directly to the battery.
I was drawing power(+) from the orange wire coming from the ignition, and I had it grounded (-) to the black with white strip coming from the horn.
I was going to re wire it to the low beam headlight (yellow wire), but the wiring diagram shows that this yellow wires' origin is, in fact, the same orange wire that sucked me dry last time.
Mabye by tieing in to a lower guage wire further out from the electrical "core" (batteries, starter, ignition, etc), I could have prevented this.
It was strange...when I was driving home on the dead barrery, all my lights worked, including the new ones, but my horn was dead. It seems like certain components run off the battery, while others run off the rectifyer. Mabye I should draw pwer from the horn?
I'm still hesitant to hook them back up, because, like I said, all the hot wires are ultimatly connected.
Unless....do they make some sort of "power reducer/ resister", that would lower the amount of power used by the lights?
I don't know...the extra margin of safety the lights provide may not be worth this loss of piece of mind from never knowing when the bike's gonna die. Mabye I'll get one of those friction operated lights like you see on bicycles, with the little wheel that rides against the tire...and a big orange flag!
